  • Carol Rubin is a Washington DC artist, living and working in the area for many years. She also spends time on the coast in Orleans, Massachusetts.

Rubin explores plant life, landscape and figuration yielding active, powerful paintings, rooted in abstract expressionism. She is drawn to the forceful interactions of form, space and light found in verdant growth and geological formation. Her tools are color and broad gestural marks, using a back-and-forth process of building and scraping to grow her paintings.

“The universe is a hum of vibrating energy, endlessly transforming, never the same. I work from direct observation, but I paint an emotional response to nature’s energy. I use loose paint, working in rapid strokes across the canvas. I seek to activate the surface, touching each part of the canvas multiple times, setting a rhythm. I explore how objects can move away from and toward the surface of the picture plane, leaving a trail of their movement and sometimes disappearing under layers of paint. I enjoy working with vivid whites as light, exploring the way light pushes against form.”

Rubin’s work has been the subject of solo exhibitions throughout the Washington DC area and beyond including Studio Gallery, Space Gallery, Washington Studio School Gallery, and Martha Spak Gallery in DC, and at Garvey Rita in Orleans, MA. She has contributed to group exhibitions nationally. Rubin’s work is held in private, public, and corporate collections internationally, including Amazon Inc. and The Blackstone Group; and shows internationally through the State Department’s Arts in Embassies program.

Rubin is a member of the faculty at the Washington Studio School, DC. She received the Masters Certificate of Art from the Washington Studio School in 2010, and studied art at University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and the Corcoran School of Art, Washington DC.
