Carey Crane's is a gestural abstract painter living in Shady Side Maryland. Raised yards from Tampa Bay on Pinellas Point, St. Petersburg, Florida, Carey spent countless hours in his Artist father’s open-air studio. The experience instilled an improvisational approach to art-as-play; a dynamic "conversation" with emerging forms.
Under the mentorship of painter Hiram Williams, Carey began developing a deeply personal visual "vocabulary" of painterly forms. After completing his BFA in 1982, Carey's path took an unexpected turn when he found work as a museum exhibit fabricator, leading to a career as a curator of exhibits. His lifelong artistic practice was revitalized in 2010 while interacting with artists at the Museum of Art in Las Cruces New Mexico.
Carey begins his paintings outdoors, responding to the environment, freely brushing or drawing sinuous arabesques suggesting motion. His art often evokes elaborate narrative responses from viewers. He regards intuitive abstract painting as a means of resolving and unifying varieties of visual experience, as dreaming reconfigures and reconciles disparate memories.
